Tracking the Evolution of Lithium in Giants Using Asteroseismology: Super-Li-rich Stars Are Almost Exclusively Young Red-clump Stars

چکیده

We report novel observational evidence on the evolutionary status of lithium-rich giant stars by combining asteroseismic and lithium abundance data. Comparing observations models gravity-mode period spacing $\Delta\Pi_{1}$, we find that super-Li-rich giants (SLR, A(Li)~$> 3.2$~dex) are almost exclusively young red-clump (RC) stars. Depending exact phase evolution, which requires more data to refine, SLR either (i) less than $\sim 2$~Myr or (ii) $\sim40$~Myr past main core helium flash (CHeF). Our set a strong upper limit for time inferred Li-enrichment $< 40$~Myr post-CHeF, lending support idea is produced around CHeF. In contrast, evolved RC ($> post-CHeF) generally have low abundances (A(Li)~$<1.0$~dex). Between young, phase, mostly old, Li-poor there an average reduction about 3 orders magnitude. This Li-destruction may occur rapidly. situation be clear with having Li between two extremes Li-poor. group, `Li-rich' ($3.2 >$~A(Li)~$> 1.0$~dex), shows wide range states.

Asteroseismology of red-clump stars with CoRoTand Kepler

The availability of asteroseismic constraints for a large number of red giants with CoRoT and, in the near future with Kepler, paves the way for detailed studies of populations of galactic-disk red giants. We investigate which information on the observed population can be recovered by the distribution of the observed seismic constraints: the frequency of maximum power of solar-like oscillations...

Distances to Anomalous X-ray Pulsars using Red Clump Stars

We identify “red clump stars” – core helium-burning giants – among 2MASS stars and use them to measure the run of reddening with distance in the direction of each of the Galactic Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXP). We combine this with extinction estimates from X-ray spectroscopy to infer distances and find that the locations of all AXP are consistent with being in Galactic spiral arms. We also find...

Red Clump stars in the Boötes III stellar system

We report on the detection of a population of Red Clump (RC) stars probably associated with the recently discovered stellar system Boötes III. The RC is identified as a 3σ peak in the Luminosity Function (LF) of colour-selected stars extracted from the SDSS database. The peak is consistently detected in the g, r, i and z LFs at the expected luminosity of a typical RC at the distance of Boötes I...

Discovery of Super-li Rich Red Giants in Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies

Stars destroy lithium (Li) in their normal evolution. The convective envelopes of evolved red giants reach temperatures of millions of K, hot enough for the Li(p, α)He reaction to burn Li efficiently. Only about 1% of first-ascent red giants more luminous than the luminosity function bump in the red giant branch exhibit A(Li) > 1.5. Nonetheless, Li-rich red giants do exist. We present 15 Li-ric...

Weighing the local dark matter with RAVE red clump stars

We determine the Galactic potential in the solar neigbourhood from RAVE observations. We select red clump stars for which accurate distances, radial velocities, and metallicities have been measured. Combined with data from the 2MASS and UCAC catalogues, we build a sample of ∼4600 red clump stars within a cylinder of 500 pc radius oriented in the direction of the South Galactic Pole, in the rang...
